  • NIn order for your teen to be eligible for Driver Education, he or she must be a minimum age of 14 years and 8 months
  • NSuccessfully complete Teen Segment 1
  • NComplete 26 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of driving, and 4 hours of observation. Depending on the location and time of year, 2 hours of driving could be on the range.
  • NPass the written exam consisting of 80 multiple choice questions with a score of 70% or better
  • NUpon completion of Teen Segment I, the student will receive a certificate to obtain a Level I License (Learner's Permit) from the Secretary of State. This allows them to drive with a parent or guardian in the car
  • NThe Level I License requires that each student complete 50 hours of driving, including 10 hours of supervised night driving with a parent or designated licensed adult, 21 years or older, who has had their license for 5 years or longer
  • NAfter students have had their Level I License for a minimum of 3 months, they may enroll in Teen Segment II. To enroll in Teen Segment 2, the teen must have completed 30 of the 50 hours behind the wheel driving required under Level I, and at least 2 hours of the required 10 hours of supervised night driving with a parent or licensed adult

Teen Segment 2

  • NAfter students have had their Level I License for a minimum of 3 months, they may enroll in Teen Segment II. To enroll in Teen Segment 2, the teen must have completed 30 of the 50 hours behind the wheel driving required under Level I, and at least 2 hours of the required 10 hours of supervised night driving with a parent or licensed adult
  • NTeen Segment 2 includes 6 hours of classroom time and students must pass the State written test.
  • NStudents must successfully pass Teen Segment 2
  • NAfter completing Teen Segment 2, which requires a minimum of 50 hours behind the wheel driving, including 10 hours of supervised night driving, and 6 months of driving with no crashes or violations in the final 3 months, students can take their driving skills test with a State Certified Road Test Examiner
  • NOnce a student passes the skills test, the test examiner will update it with the Secretary of State (SOS). A teen must be 16 years old and have successfully completed all steps to receive their Level 2. New Level 2 teen drivers must make sure their driving status is updated in the SOS site before driving alone on the road
  • NNew Level 2 teen drivers can only drive unsupervised between the hours of 5 a.m. - 10 p.m. with only one friend in the car unless they are going to and from a school or work event. If your teen must drive outside of these hours due to employment or school events, the proof of these circumstances is required
  • NWhile on a level 2 license, any driving outside of 10 p.m. curfew requires supervision with a parent or person age 21 or older with a valid driver's license. After your teen has held the Level 2 License for 6 months and they are 17, the Secretary of State will automatically update your teen to the Level 3 License, which has full privilege
